Traveling with LEMS: Tips that Help Me Stay Safe and Enjoy the Journey
By: Tracy, LEMS Patient and Board Member
Living with LEMS doesn’t mean giving up travel—it just means planning ahead. Over the years, I’ve learned a few simple strategies that help make traveling easier and less
stressful.
- Plan for time zone changes. If you’re traveling to a different time zone, set reminders on your phone for your medication schedule based on your destination. This helps ensure you don’t miss a dose while adjusting to the new time.
- Keep moving. Whether you’re traveling by car or airplane, try not to stay seated for long periods. Take opportunities to stand up, stretch, and walk around when it’s safe to do so. Even short movement breaks can help reduce stiffness and fatigue.
- Pack extra medication. Always bring more medication than you think you’ll need. Delays, canceled flights, or unexpected changes in plans can happen, and having extra medication provides peace of mind.
- Use airline assistance when needed. Don’t hesitate to request wheelchair assistance at the airport. Conserving your energy can make a big difference and help you enjoy your trip once you arrive.
- Bring your mobility devices. If you use a rollator or wheelchair, remember that airlines allow these mobility aids to travel with you. Contact your airline before your trip if you have questions about their procedures.
Traveling with LEMS may require a little extra preparation, however, I find it well worth the memories and experiences. I love traveling with my wife, June and our family. I found that a little planning goes a long way toward helping you travel with confidence.
